Functional Capacity Assessment
A Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) provides a clear understanding of a person’s abilities, challenges, and support needs across different areas of daily life. The outcome of an FCA is a detailed report, most often used to inform NDIS planning, support funding decisions, or guide access to further services and therapies.
Capacity = Ability + Support
Every person has unique strengths and areas where additional support may be needed. A functional capacity assessment looks at how someone manages tasks, participates in activities, and interacts with their environment. The focus is on what they can do independently, what they can do with support, and where further assistance is required.
The assessment explores six key areas of functioning:
-
Social Interaction – ability to form and maintain relationships, cope with emotions in social situations, behave in ways acceptable to others, interact effectively, and engage in the community.
-
Communication – how well the participant understands and is understood by others, including speaking, listening, writing, reading, and expressing needs.
-
Learning – capacity to remember, understand, and apply new information, as well as learn and practise new skills.
-
Mobility – ability to move around safely, walk with or without aids, manage transfers, and history of falls.
-
Self Care – personal care and activities of daily living such as cooking, shopping, managing hygiene, and using transport.
-
Self Management – ability to take responsibility for planning, decision-making, organising daily life, and managing personal goals.
Psychosocial Disability & Functioning
We specialise in completing Functional Capacity Assessments (FCAs) for participants living with a psychosocial disability. Psychosocial disability refers to the functional impact that a mental health condition can have on a person’s daily life, rather than the condition itself. People experiencing psychosocial disability may live with conditions such as severe depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or personality disorders. The effects are often wide-ranging and can make it difficult to engage in employment, study, relationships, and everyday activities.

Psychosocial disability is unique in that its impacts can fluctuate. A participant may experience periods of stability and independence alongside times of reduced functioning, where support is essential. This variability can create additional challenges in accessing the right supports. An FCA provides a structured way of documenting these needs, identifying where assistance is required, and demonstrating to the NDIS how a participant’s mental health condition affects their capacity across different areas of life.

Every person has the right to be understood for their abilities and supported where they need it, so they can live with dignity, independence, and purpose.

How does Lotti help with an FCA?
When I complete a Functional Capacity Assessment, I don’t just look at forms and checklists — I take the time to really understand the person behind the paperwork. My approach is collaborative: I engage directly with the individual, their family, and key supports (such as support workers, therapists, or coordinators) to get a full picture of daily life.
Together, we break the assessment down into clear areas — communication, mobility, self-care, social connection, learning and self-management— so nothing feels overwhelming. I focus on listening to lived experiences, noticing strengths as well as challenges, and weaving these into a practical report that truly reflects the person’s needs and goals.
The result is more than an assessment; it’s a pathway that helps people and their support teams move forward with clarity and confidence.
